Reading Kitchen & Bath Renovation/Addition
After living in this c. 1785 Georgian for twelve years, the owners wanted to improve existing room function and access to daylight and views, while preserving the character of their historical home. Their primary goals included creating: an enlarged kitchen, a more conveniently located mud room, a reconfigured driveway with new entry porch, a more generous second-floor master bath, additional second-floor closets, and a better visual and physical relationship to the rear yard and woods beyond.
In an effort to minimize disruption to the existing antique structure, we decided to add a new, enlarged kitchen to the rear, with new master bath and closets above, and to repurpose adjacent rooms. The new salt-box shaped addition is accessible from both the reconfigured driveway to the west and the kitchen garden to the east. The existing kitchen is slated to become a buttery and laundry work room, while the study and dining room will swap locations to better accommodate the kitchen addition.
Though a relatively small renovation/addition, it has made for a more livable, better functioning home, without compromising the original building’s charm.
